Uh oh…the toilet paper hoarders may have been right. Well, not really, because the hoarding that took place last month is the reason why today’s news is more concerning. If shelves weren’t already bare and warehouses empty, we might not be too worried about this development.
What’s the problem that has some folks (finally legitimately) concerned about toilet paper supplies? Canadian lumber companies cut production by up to 25% in response to perceived falling demand for the wood chips used to produce paper bags, cardboard boxes, and, yes, you guessed it, toilet paper and wipes.
Companies like West Fraser Timber Co. and Canfor Corp. idled production over the last month and that has led to a shortage of supply of these critical chips. Without Canadian government intervention to get more sawmill capacity back online, pulp mills could find themselves without the raw materials they need to pump out our household products.
So if you didn’t stockpile your TP when we posted some great deals in the past OR if you weren’t part of the hoarding chaos of the past month, you could be looking at much higher prices to wipe in the coming months.
