Thank you First Responders, Medical professionals, Food and Grocery workers and drivers delivering truckloads of goods or bags of food to/from our local merchants, so the rest of us can stay home.
While the rest of us are all sitting around at home during the Covid-19 outbreak, either working hard from home or hardly working, a lot of folks have started to focus more of their time and efforts to their mental and physical well being. One part of this trend is monitoring/tracking their vital signs and activities. We wanted to provide links to the most popular, health monitoring tools. These include: Electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG), Pulse Oximeters (Pulse Ox), Blood Pressure Cuffs (BP Machines) and Thermometers (manual, digital and no touch). Many other devices such as fitness bracelets and digital watches can provide some but not all these functions, but are great tools for tracking your lifestyle. We’ll put together an article specifically focused on these other health devices this week.
Today we focus on EKG devices that are popular, highly rated and reasonably priced at Amazon
EKG – AliveCor KardiaMobile | FDA Cleared | Smart Phone required
If you’ve seen a television commercial promoting an at home Electrocardiogram(EKG), it’s likely this one: The KardiaMobile EKG.Combined with the KardiMobile app on your smart phone, you can record an EKG, by yourself, in 30 seconds and without the electrodes they glue to you at the Doctors’ Office. Now this isn’t a full EKG, but is designed to identify possible AFib conditions.
Regularly priced at $99, it’s currently Just $89, with free shipping.</>
Note: Not recommended for use with pacemakers and ICDs
EKG – AliveCor KardiaMobile 6L – “The Only FDA-Cleared personal 6-Lead EKG” – Smart Phone Required
KardiaMobile 6L a personal EKG that works with a smartphone and easily fits into your pocket. Take EKGs anytime, anywhere without applying wires, or patches, as often as you’d like!
Following a 30-second EKG, you will know if your heart rhythm is normal or if Atrial Fibrillation was detected. AFib is one of the most common arrhythmias, and a leading cause of stroke.
The KardiaMobile 6L EKG is in stock at Amazon, with free shipping for $149.00
EKG&BP – Omron Complete Wireless Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitor + EKG; Measure Bp, EKG, Afib, Tachycardia, Bradycardia, Sinus Rhythm
If you don’t already have a Blood Pressure Monitor, you should probably check out this wireless bluetooth cuff and EKG base station. Omron, based in Japan has been in business since 1933 and is considered the leader in-home personal blood pressure monitors. I personally owned an Omron calculator in the 1970s and own an Onrom bluetooth BP cuff an previously used a “connected” unit from them before.
This unit is much more sophisticated than even the Kardia Mobile, in that it “diagnoses”/reports on more than just possible Afib. This unit can be shipped to you and arrive on Friday. It’s available with free shipping from Amazon for $167.00
FDA Medical Devices and Approval
This is a narrow, overly simplified explanation about what a Medical Device is and how is approved by the FDA. The Food and Drug Administration controls, through licensing and rules control the creation, approval and usage of pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Medical devices include:
- Devices placed into the body, like a pacemaker or a stent
- Devices used for treatment outside the body such as and traction machine or TENS device
- Devices used to measure vital signs, blood gas levels or test blood and things such as Blood pressure cuffs.
Most devices are tested against FDA approved devices that provide the same function. So, if a business comes up with a way to take your blood pressure without a cuff, the FDA requires that they show it provides the same results of existing FDA approved devices.
