CVS 2/4 (Maureen) – $13.72 PROFIT on $164.66 in Merchandise (108.3% Saved)

I’ve been reading comments from people upset because their %-off coupons are only deducting a fraction of the expected deduction.  From what I understand, since February 1, the CVS registers are programmed to apply the %-off coupons to whatever amount remains after all manufacturer coupons, CVS store coupons, and Extrabucks are applied.  I can confirm this sad news.  I made it a point to ask the cashier to scan my 30%-off Any L’Oreal Product and 40%-off Garnier Face Product coupons before scanning any other coupons.  I had $35.05 in regular-priced L’Oreal face products and $13.98 in regular-priced Garnier face products.  After the cashier scanned my manufacturer and CVS Red Machine coupons and totaled the order, the 30% L’Oreal had only deducted $3.32 and the Garnier 40% coupon had only deducted $0.51.  Even worse, once I paid for the pre-tax balance of the transaction with Extrabucks and the cashier totaled the order again, both %-off coupons were kicked out completely.  I made sure I did not use Beauty Club or force-printed Extrabucks to pay.  So it’s true (at least for now).  We can hope it’s a coding error that will be fixed, but it’s possibly intentional and here to stay.

Nevertheless, I had a great trip.  As with all coupon-policy noose-tightening, we will learn to adjust.  For perspective, just think about how much we would be paying if we did not use any coupons or if we lived in a location where coupons and deeply-discounted promotions are a rarity.  We are still very, very lucky.

As always, cashback rebates vary (in kind and value) by account.  Some offers may no longer be available to activate, and some print-at-home coupons may no longer be available to print.

Happy shopping!

  1. Thank you for explaining the % off. I would hope it’s a glitch and not here to stay?

  2. They told me you could not use the 40% off on sale or promo items. thank you

    • They always say that.

If the item is on sale (2/$8 when the regular shelf price is $5.99), the %-off coupons will not take anything off.

If the promotion is to get $10 Extrabucks for spending $30 on L’Oreal face products, and the qualifying products are the regular shelf price, then the %-off coupons will apply.

  3. No it is not a glitch, it happened to me last week, this is the new policy so you have to figure all ways when % coupons are involved

    • It’s not a new policy, but is an issue with system coding.
CVS is committing fraud and is in violation of consumer protection laws. You should be contacting your Attorney General office and reporting it with proof from your receipts.

  4. Had a “NIGHTMARE TRIP” yesterday…….no wonder all of sudden they’re issuing more & more of the fabulous 25%, 30% & 40% off with some even being BRAND SPECIFIC and even those are not being accepted – I believe they’re going to loose a lot of customers after all is said & done. Who has the time to wait at the checkout counter for 45 minutes while the register is re-calculating over & over & each time the amount you owe is changing right before your eyes…..when it would easily have taken only 5 or 10 minutes to checkout if they would just HONOR the coupons that they issue! This is just not working for me at all……if I was a drinking woman, I sure would of had A BIG ONE after that trip!!!!

  5. Same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. I used a 40% off one item that was over $25.00. I had a $5.00 off for Roc which I knew would go against the 40%. What got me was that I used ECBs to pay for the rest. This resulted in a whopping .72 taken off as the 40%. I complained directly to CVS.com, who directed my complaint to the store manager. Further irritation was that I specifically stated in my email that this is a corporate issue dealing with ethical transparency of promotional propaganda. Rather than do anything, they sent me a preprocessed message and messaged the manager. My issue is that I paid more in a monitory concept using ECBs than what it would have cost me in actual cash. What is the point of promotions % off when in fact that isn’t the case.
Also, I’d like to advise all CVS shoppers that surveys sent to you are not beneficial for store managers. Unless you are marking 5s for every section, store managers are scored at ZERO. The scale we are given is not the same as store managers are scaled on. Their scale is 0/5. No in between. All surveys with mixed numbers goes against the manager’s monthly and quarterly scores. PLEASE keep this in mind when you are filling these surveys out. It’s not fair to managers who are given 100s of scoring categories that must all be 5s. Also keep in mind that staff cuts are not taken into consideration. In CVS’s mind a manager should be able to do it all, no matter the quantity of responsibilities or tasks.
