I had a great trip to CVS on Sunday evening although not every deal worked as expected.  The prices suddenly jumped at my “cheap” store and were actually higher in store than the online prices.  I skipped the L’Oreal deal because I didn’t get the $2/1 hair coupons in my 12/3 insert.  There were no Hershey’s Gold candy bars at my store even though it’s shown in the ad.  The cashier said customers had been asking for them all day, but she had no idea when the store would get them in.  The Rimmel coupons are beeping, and the cashier said they weren’t taking them, so I left them out of my order.  Nevertheless, I had a $10/$50 total order coupon and a 20% off coupon along with some great coupons from the Red Coupon Machine.

Also, I received a CVS coupon by email last week to get $8 Extrabucks for spending $50, expiring January 17.  I had to click a link to activate it.  I expected it to print as an $8/$50 from the Red Coupon Machine, but instead, when I scanned my card at the Red Coupon Machine, I received $8 Extrabucks with a 12/31 expiration.  I don’t know why I got it, but I suspect the $8 Extrabucks (and the possible $50 spend requirement), possibly contributed to my 20%-off coupon’s not deducting the full 20% for regular-priced items.

I split the purchases into two transactions because the more coupons there are in a transaction, the more confused the registers seem to get, and I didn’t want any of my coupons to be kicked out or reduced in value.  Also, I had a force-printed $10 ECB and $9 Beauty Club ECB (those coupons will lower the value of of a %-off coupon), so I used those ECBs on items with sale prices.  In the first transaction, I put all the items with sale prices together and paid with the $10 and $9 ECBs; in the second, I put all the items that are at regular price and used the 20% off coupon, the $10/$50, and all remaining ECBs.

One last note: the store manager told me last week (comments on other sites confirm this) that $/$$ total-order coupons will no longer stack with $/$$ product or category coupons.  The minimums for each must be met separately.  For example, if we have a $10/$50 total-order coupon and a $10/$30 facial product coupon, we used to be able to buy $30 in facial products and $20 in other products and use both $/$$ coupons to get $20 off a $50 order.  That won’t work anymore.  Now we need to have $30 in facial products and $50 in other products or one of the $/$$ coupons will be kicked out.  This only seems to apply to “minimum spend” coupons (as in $4 off $18 hair care).  If the CVS coupon is for a straight dollar amount off a number of items (as in $3 off any Schick razor or $1.50 off three candy bar singles), it will not affect the minimum spend amount for the other $/$$ coupons in the order.  But as usual with CVS, register changes often introduce new glitches on top of the existing ones.  I do believe this is another possible reason why my 20% off coupon fell short of what I expected even though the prices of the products I bought should have covered all the minimums for the total-order, category, and product $/$$ coupons I used.

20% off regular prices (after CVS store coupons) (emailed) = $23.38 deduction***

***I should have had a higher deduction for the 20% off coupon, but I made a profit on some pretty pricey merchandize, and the order would have been a nightmare to void and re-ring.

  1. The Hershey’s Gold candy bars at my store were in a stand alone cardboard display. Only ONE cashier knew about it, even the manager knew nothing. Typical….

  2. Amazing deals! Thx for sharing!

  3. The Rimmel coupons didn’t beep for me. I bought 3 shadow sticks at $4.99 each. I also got $5 Revlon and $5 Almay from Red machine, so I bought a Revlon brow fantasy at $9.99, got $4 extra bucks and two Almay lip balm at $6.79 and got $4 extra bucks. That’s $.99 for the Revlon and $2.29 each for the Almay. Also got the Purex, and the Hershey cookie layer, although my BOGO coupon only took off $2.21 for some reason. No Hershey gold here, either. I grabbed the wrong single Hershey bar, it was $1.75 but the $.74 coupon still went through.

Total before coupons was 49.28. Apparently, that’s enough for the computer to allow the $10/50 coupon to work!

So with the weird blips with the Hersheys, total OOP was $14.83 but got $15.50 back in extra bucks. Plus I’ll get a $3 beauty club bucks. I’ll take it!

  4. How do you receive emails from CVS?

    • You register your Extracare card on the CVS.com website and elect to receive emails in the account preferences section.

  5. Maureen – just wanted to let you know that I took the plunge with those k-cup filters… and you were right, they are awesome! Couldn’t comment on the original post for some reason!

  6. In order to use the FSA 5 off 10 coupon, did you have to pay for those items with a FSA debit card? I’m just curious as I don’t actually have one, and wondering if I’d still be able to use the coupon with another form of payment.

    • No FSA card needed. You use the $5/$10 FSA product coupon just like any other Red Machine coupon. If you scan the item at the Red Coupon Machine, you will see if it is an FSA product.
