My mother received another $10/$50 coupon and some really great coupons from the Red Coupon Machine, so I put together a nice trip for her.   The Right Guard deal is the star of this transaction, so activate the $4.99/2 SavingStar rebate and print the coupon from the link while both are available.  Frankly, I expected both to disappear by this afternoon.

  1. ive always been told you cant use multiple $x off of $y cvs coupons unless your final total is equal to or more than them combined…the computer took all of yours?

    • You mean for the Right Guard? My store has always allowed two if one is brand specific ($2 off any Right Guard) and the other is a category coupon ($1 off $5 any deodorant). Plus, in the case of the Right guard, I bought four products ($13.76 total for the four combined), so I had enough Right Guard to use both coupons without stacking CVS coupons.

However, if I had a $10/$50 total order coupon AND a $5/$30 total order coupon, I would need to have a pre-coupon transaction total of $80 in order to use both.

And in the case of the cereal ($3.98 total), the 98% rule has always applied for me (if you have reached 98% or more of the minimum, the coupon will go through or the ECB will print). That is why the register took a $1 off $4 cereal CRT when my total was $3.98.

Or do you mean something else?

  2. DId your Right Guard coupon deduct the full $4.99 or did they only apply the free coupon to the 50% off item?

    • I didn’t use the BOGO coupon from the insert. I used the $4.99/2 printable coupon (still available) that I linked to in the post, so I got $4.99 off 2.

  3. Thanks Maureen! CVS must have changed their systems again… I did the right guard deal and my subtotal after all the coupons was $0…but I had to pay sales tax on the subtotal of all the items before coupons!

If I did transactions at CVS and used coupons and my total balance was $0, I would walk out of the store paying no sales tax because i think what they were doing was subtracting all the coupons and then taxing on any subtotal balance… all my stores around here were doing this the last few years.

I was shocked today when I had to pay sales tax! Anyone elses CVS doing this now?

    • This is partly related to state sale tax regulations and how CVS is coding their own coupons (even Red Machine coupons) as manufacturer’s coupons or store coupons.

In Florida, tax is calculated on the sale price of an item. A store coupon is considered a sale price deduction, so tax can’t be applied to the portion of the price covered by a store coupon. But we are taxed on the value of the product that is “paid for” by manufacturer’s coupon. So if I buy two deodorants at $5 each ($10 total) and use one $5 manufacturer’s coupon and one $2 store coupon, I should pay tax on $8 because the store coupon is considered a store sale price deduction. If I don’t have a store coupon, I will pay tax on the full $10. If I buy two deodorants at BOGO $5 and use a $5 manufacturer’s coupon and a $2 store coupon, I should pay tax on $3.

However, a lot of Red Machine coupons have “manufacturer’s coupon” printed on them, so even though they are clearly store coupons and can be stacked with our insert or printable manufacturer’s coupons, I don’t think they are store coupons for tax calculations.

But I haven’t looked into it closely. And CVS is making so many changes to the way the registers apply coupons, it’s almost impossible to predict the grand total of a transaction involving coupons of any kind.
