  1. The true measure is price per square foot, not price per roll, and we should never be paying more than 1 cent/sq. ft. Different sized rolls and packaging are manufacturers tricks to make it difficult to calculate true cost. If at all possible, please list total square footage of the package size. Thanks for all you do.

    • For the record, I agree with you. One penny per square foot is the most I will pay for 1-ply paper. For a really premium brand like Charmin (not Essentials, which is 1-ply) or Quilted Northern, I’ll go a little higher, but never more than two cents per square foot.

However, most coupon websites report toilet paper deals in terms of single-roll prices simply because the total square footage of the package is often not readily available information and because manufacturers are constantly changing the packaging. You have to go to a store to look, and in addition, you usually have to go to a specific retailer to look because manufacturers sometimes make retailer-specific package sizes (makes price-matching difficult because the packages and UPCs are not exactly the same even when you expect them to be).

I can’t agree more, however, that toilet paper manufacturers use a bagful of tricks to obscure the “real” cost of the product.

    • Christopher Sumpter says:

This package is 240 sq. ft, for what it’s worth.
