Walgreens 4/8 (Steve) – $1.75 PROFIT on $78.71 of Merchandise (102.2% Saved)

I couldn’t resist going back to Walgreens on the last day of the sale. I thought I would have to get very creative to put together a deal, but that wasn’t the case. All my first choices were on the shelves. I am shocked that the shelves weren’t completely cleared of items that matched my Irish Spring coupons. Also, I earned 70 Everyday Points for this transaction (value $0.07-$0.09 when redeemed), so those extra pennies of savings are included in the final statistical tally for this trip.

I paid almost nothing out-of-pocket, because I redeemed 40,000 Balance Rewards points for $50 (and my transaction replaced all of those points!)

Here’s what I bought, along with the coupons used:

FOUR IRISH SPRING BAR SOAP 6-PACKS, on sale $3.99 (reg. $4.99)
Get 5000 Balance Rewards points (value $5-$6.25) for every two select Irish Spring Body Wash or Bar Soap 6-pack, Softsoap Body Wash or Softsoap Hand Soap Refills purchased
Used four $0.50/1 Irish Spring Bar Soap coupons, 4/2 SS insert
Price at Register: $13.96, but received 10,000 BR points (value up to $12.50)
NET PRICE FOR ALL: $1.46 (or 37 cents each!)

FOUR IRISH SPRING BODY WASHES, on sale $3.99 (reg. $4.59)
Get 5000 Balance Rewards points (value $5-$6.25) for every two select Irish Spring Body Wash or Bar Soap 6-pack, Softsoap Body Wash or Softsoap Hand Soap Refills purchased
Used four $1/1 Irish Spring Body Wash coupons, 4/2 SS insert OR $1/1 Irish Spring Body Wash printable coupons (preclipped)
Price at Register: $11.96, but received 10,000 BR points (value up to $12.50)
NET PRICE FOR ALL: FREE + $0.54 MONEYMAKER!

EIGHT WAL-DRYL ALLERGY 24 CT, on sale 2/$6 (monthly sale; reg. $4.49)
Get 5000 Balance Rewards points (value $5-$6.25) for every two purchased (monthly points deal)
No coupons used
Price at Register: $24, but received 20,000 BR points (value up to $25)
NET PRICE FOR ALL: FREE + $1 MONEYMAKER!

THREE TRIDENT SWEDISH FISH GUM, on clearance $0.39 (reg. $1.49)
Get $1.50 cashback from Ibotta for buying three Trident Gum
Get $0.25 cashback from Ibotta for uploading any Grocery receipt
Used two $0.50/1 Trident Gum peelie coupons (I had these from previous purchases, because I was buying items with $0.50/1 peelies and not using them when I was using my $1.59/3 Trident Gum printable coupons a few weeks back)
Price at Register: $0.17, but received $1.75 from Ibotta
NET PRICE FOR ALL: FREE + $1.58 MONEYMAKER!
***Note: If you have a coupon that exceeds the value of an item by a little bit, the register will still allow coupons on some of the items until you get to a coupon that would make the total value of the similar items less than the value of your coupons. That’s why two coupons went through fine with no beeps. Had a tried to use a third coupon, there would have been a problem.

The $0.09 of Everyday Points earned is included in the stats below.

Total Retail Value of All Merchandise: $78.71
Net Price Paid for Everything: FREE + $1.75 MONEYMAKER
Savings Rate (excluding tax): 102.2%

In case you’re wondering, my tax was $2.32 for this transaction. So, if you include the tax, I paid $0.57 for everything pictured 🙂

  1. Wal-dryl store specific? Ours rang up $4.49

    • Steve Pinski says

You have to buy two to get the sale price. First one rings up $4.49 with your card. When the second one is rung up, the total becomes $6 for both.

  2. Wait…I didn’t think you could earn points in a transaction when you redeem points?

    • Steve Pinski says

In some circumstances, you can. If you have any deals that require the purchase of a certain dollar amount, you can possibly reduce the amount spent too much and not earn the new points. However, on deals like the Softsoap/Irish Spring deal and the Wal-Dryl, the deal is to buy a certain number of items (Buy Two, Get 5000 points.) You can still do those deals and earn the new points, even if you are redeeming points.

  3. Steve, I see you using 40,000 points a lot and getting a lot of free merchandise. I am new to Walgreens. Would it be in my best interest to buy the allergy tablets to get 40,000 points in one haul? Meaning paying OOP in order to get free merchandise later? Can I pay with my 5 rr? I am $1.78 away from BE reward. I could earn that easily. Could I then use that as well to pay for the tablets?

    • Steve Pinski says

Points are hard to spend, because the points deals where you have to spend a certain dollar amount typically don’t work when you redeem points in a transaction.. We’ve had a few weeks with good deals that make it easy to roll the points and do big transactions (because they are deals that award points for buying a certain number of items instead of a certain dollar amount), but that’s very rare. I wouldn’t recommend accumulating the points intentionally. Just slowly build them as you shop normally. Try not to spend points in smaller increments. Once you get to 40,000 points, then you want to watch for opportunities like we’ve had the past two weeks.

Now…if you use those allergy tablets or you have a friend/family member that will, maybe you should buy them. It’s unlikely you will see a better deal any time in the next year. I just wouldn’t be in a rush to tie up all that money when you don’t know when you’ll have a great opportunity to redeem the points easily. It could be months.
