dollar-general-022115I had a great trip to Dollar General this afternoon! It’s been a while since I shopped there with a $5/$25, but I have to say that the updated register software seems to make things go (a little) smoother.

I had them scan the $5/$25 store coupon first, but it didn’t deduct until after they scanned all my other coupons and totaled the order. The Beneful coupons went through with no beeps. (In case you didn’t know, their coupon policy now allows overage.) However, the $3/2 Nivea Body Wash coupon was a beeper, so they manually entered eight $1.50 deductions to give me the $12 of discounts.

However, I was pleased that I didn’t have to whip out my coupon policy printout. They seem to be getting a little better 😉

Here’s what I bought, along with the coupons used:
EIGHT NIVEA BODY WASHES 8.4 OZ, on sale $2 (regular price $2.50)
TWO GAIN FIREWORKS, on sale $4.50 (regular price $5.50 – educated guess)
SIX BENEFUL HEALTHY SMILES DOG TREATS, regular price $1
ONE INTERNATIONAL DELIGHT CREAMER, regular price $3.50 (ouch, but I am out and wanted coffee when I returned home!)
Used one $5/$25 Dollar General printable store coupon (valid 2/21 ONLY)
and used four $3/2 Nivea Body Wash 8.4 oz or larger coupons, 2/8 SS newspaper insert
and used two $2/1 Tide Pods, Gain Flings, Downy Unstopables, Bounce Burst, or Gain Fireworks coupons, 1/11 RP newspaper insert
and used three $4/2 Beneful Healthy Smiles Dog Treats *no size restrictions* printable coupons (no longer available)
and used one $1/1 International Delight Creamer printable coupon (register)
Price at Register: $0.50 (plus $1.89 sales tax – not factored in stats)

Total Retail Value of All Merchandise: $40.50
Net Price Paid for Everything: $0.50
Savings Rate (excluding tax): 98.8%

  1. My store was out of the dog treats, but I still wanted to get the 50c Nivea body washes. I was so looking forward to seeing if the registers would allow the overage too! The Beneful are always just $1 for the smaller bags, so I will try again if they come back in stock.

I had the same issues with the $3/2 body wash coupon that you did. The mgr. was called up and after she explained to me that this was not intended for this product and bla bla bla making an exception for me this one time…..(like I was trying to scam them?) she did manually put my ONE coupon in for me. I was thankful at least for that! I still wanted to try the new “overage” policy, because I have my doubts now especially since the Nivea coupon was rejected.

I hate using coupons there and pray the registers will start to work properly per their policy.

    • *also would you have been up to your $25 without even buying the Gains? I add up everything else to total $25.50. Is that DG $5/$25 before coupons?

I bought 1 of each kind of the body washes like you did too, they both looked good to me and I have never tried those before. I am excited to use those now!

      • Steve Pinski says:

Yeah, but I needed to get my total post coupons over zero 🙂 I think it was $34.50 before the coupons, so it would have been $25.50 but my total would have been negative if I didn’t buy the Gains. $25 is before coupons, but when they scan it the $5 won’t come off right away. When they total after scanning the rest of your coupons the register takes the $5 off.

    • Steve Pinski says:

Hahhaha not intended for that product? That exact size is written on the coupon lol.

      • Yea I rarely shop there my self unless it is a really really cheap deal. So my coupons also beeped on the $3/2 body wash at two locations. But I can now call my self a seasoned couponer and know how to read a coupon properly and select the right products that match. It is such a shame to have to argue with them over it every time. But I see they put it through each time! LOL I was able to pick up a total of 8 body washes, 5 of the smaller hand lotions and one of the 13.5oz Simply Soft one! Happy Camper, cause I am all stocked up on the lotion department! Thanks Steve and the gang!

  2. boo hoo…..my DG did not even have a tag on the shelf for the Nivea body wash. Maybe a larger DG would carry it??

  3. Nice haul. I also hit up DG to take advantage of the $5 off $25. Had a little trouble using the Nivea coupons on the $2.25 hand lotion. They would not scan at all. As a matter of fact, none of my coupons were scanning. Not even the coupons for the Downy Unstoppables. Cashier first called her manager and the manager told her they didn’t carry the lotion that the 2.00 off coupons were for. However, she told her to go ahead and put them through this one time manually. She decided to ask her coworker if he would ring it up on the other register as she was fairly new and not used to entering things manually. Turns out, all the coupons scanned perfectly on the other register. Guess the register she was on was having problems with coupons. The other cashier told me he see’s me in there often and he was going to make sure I was taken care of. It’s so nice to have a coupon friendly cashier.

  4. My digital coupons keep crashing the registers in my city. Which is really annoying because I love my cashiers they’re very friendly and helpful and know that I’m going to take a billion years lol.

  5. Mine wouldn’t use the coupon because it says mens

    • Steve Pinski says:

Shoot. They didn’t say Nivea or Nivea for Men like the lotions? Heck, maybe that’s why it beeped. I guess I may have screwed up.
