HOT – $70/1 Priceline Hotel Coupon on Facebook @ Noon Thursday 5/17!

If you’re planning a trip anytime soon, you may want to take part in this awesome Priceline giveaway. On Thursday 5/17, Priceline will be giving away $70 coupons for hotel bookings. Obviously we’re going to have some sort of fine print, but we don’t know all the details yet. In the meantime, I recommend the following:

1) “Like” Priceline on Facebook
2) Try to snag one of those coupons  on their Facebook page. The $70 Hotel Coupon giveaway is slated to start at NOON on Thursday, May 17th.

According to Priceline, the quantities are limited, so make sure you act fast. I wish they had done this promotion a few days ago, as I just booked five nights in a Dublin, Ireland hotel. (I have a business trip  next week for my other job, but don’t worry; I’ll still be posting some, plus Naomi will be posting more than usual. Stephanie will do some shopping while I’m gone as well and I’ll write up her trip(s) after she emails me the photos and list.)

Thanks to Ewa for the tip by email.

REMINDER – Really dumb Gevalia deal still available – Coffeemaker + Four Boxes of Gevalia Coffee $9.99 + free shipping!

In case you missed it earlier, the dumb Gevalia deal is still working with free shipping. I don’t know how much longer this will last, but right now you can grab four boxes of Gevalia Coffee AND a Gevalia Coffeemaker for just $9.99, plus it ships free (normally $5.95!)

No coupon clipping, no fetching items from the shelves, no worries about shelf-clearers! CLICK HERE to take advantage of this deal.

I just checked their site to do a quick count and I saw forty-seven varieties of Gevalia Coffee to choose from. Here are a few that sound great to me: Colombia, Creme Brulee, German Chocolate Cake and Espresso Roast ;)

And here’s why the deal is so good…they will enroll you in their auto-ship program and they want to send you more coffee for full price, but us “couponaholics” won’t let them get away with that ;)

Once you get your four boxes of coffee and your coffeemaker, do this: CANCEL your membership! Simply call 1-800-438-2542 to cancel the auto-ship or cancel your membership by logging into your Gevalia account online. And then enjoy your new coffee and coffeemaker!

By the way, wouldn’t a new coffeemaker and two or three bags of coffee make a great gift for someone? (And then you can keep a bag or two for yourself!)

CLICK HERE to get your four bags of Gevalia Coffee and Coffeemaker now!

Emailing for Coupons 5/14

The items listed below will be BOGO at Publix starting on Wednesday or Thursday. My thinking is that if we email some of these manufacturers we might get some coupons in the mail before the ad ends. Even if we don’t get them in time, many of the home-mailed coupons from manufacturers have longer time periods until they expire, so we should see another sale in time to use them. And if you don’t live in an area with Publix stores, that’s ok too. I bet you will see many of these items on sale at your stores too.
A few bits of advice: 1) Don’t try to email the whole list or you will burn out on this quickly; 2) Focus on the manufacturers you really like; 3) Try to be thoughtful and offer feedback, rather than only making a coupon request; 4) Don’t forget to put your full contact info on the email: full name and full mailing address.
Good luck and come back and post a comment if you score some coupons!

Kentucky Derby resources – legal online betting, Mint Julep recipe, My Old Kentucky Home Lyrics, Entries, Post Positions, Odds and more!

OK, I’m going to go a little off-topic for a post here. Today is Kentucky Derby Day, and I know a lot of you will be hosting parties or looking to bet on the race. So I’ve comprised a post with resources for Kentucky Derby online betting, plus some of the things you will want to know if you’re hosting a Kentucky Derby party.

Although I’m a cheapskate at the grocery store, I’m not a cheapskate at the track on Kentucky Derby Day. Of course I won’t be going to the track; I’ll be betting the race online legally with Twin Spires.

You might wonder…what does he mean that he’s going to bet the race legally? Isn’t online gambling illegal? Actually, not all online wagering is illegal. Back when Congress passed the law banning online betting in 2006, they created exemptions for USA-based licensed horse racing and fantasy sports sites. As a result, companies like Churchill Downs (which owns the track where the Kentucky Derby will be run) started offering online betting. You can legally bet the Kentucky Derby and avoid the long lines at the track by going to their web site, Twin Spires.

Twin Spires is offering a $100 sign-up bonus, plus they offer free racing programs and live video feeds of the races. I’ll be doing my Kentucky Derby betting there! If you want to join me, go here to sign-up at Twin Spires.

Now, if you’re going to throw a little party for the Kentucky Derby, you may want to know how to make a Mint Julep (the official drink) and you may want to know the words to My Old Kentucky Home (the song they sing before the race.) So here’s the Mint Julep recipe (from AllRecipes.com):

Ingredients:
2 cups water
2 cups white sugar
1/2 cup roughly chopped fresh mint leaves
32 fluid ounces Kentucky bourbon
8 sprigs fresh mint leaves for garnish

Directions:
1. Combine water, sugar and chopped mint leaves in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. Allow syrup to cool, approximately 1 hour. Pour syrup through a strainer to remove mint leaves
2. Fill eight cups or frozen goblets with crushed ice and pour 4 ounces of bourbon and 1/4 cup mint syrup in each. (Proportions can be adjusted depending on each person’s sweet tooth). Top each cup with a mint sprig and a straw. Trim straws to just barely protrude from the top of the cups. Serve juleps on a silver platter.

And here are the lyrics to “My Old Kentucky Home”:
The sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home
Tis summer, the people are gay
The corn top’s ripe and the meadow’s in bloom
While the birds make music all the day
The young folks roll on the little cabin floor
All merry, all happy and bright
By ‘n by hard times come a-knocking at the door
Then my old Kentucky home good night

Weep no more, my lady
Oh, weep no more, today
We will sing one song for the old Kentucky home
For the old Kentucky home far away.

They hunt no more for the ‘possum and the coon,
On meadow, the hill and the shore,
They sing no more by the glimmer of the moon,
On the bench by that old cabin door.
The day goes by like a shadow o’er the heart,
With sorrow where all was delight.
The time has come when the darkies have to part,
Then my old Kentucky home, good night.

The head must bow and the back will have to bend,
Wherever the poor folks may go
A few more days and the trouble will end,
In the field where sugar-canes may grow.
A few more days for to tote the weary load,
No matter, ’twill never be light
A few more days till we totter on the road,
Then my old Kentucky home, good night.

And here’s the list of horses in the race, along with trainers and jockeys (in parentheses in that order) and current odds as of 9:56 am Eastern:
1. Daddy Long Legs (O’Brien/O’Donoghue) 24-1
2. Optimizer (Lukas/Court) 35-1

Good luck!

I’m loving UPS My Choice – Their FREE package tracking was awesome on my Vitacost orders!

A month and a half ago I wrote about a free service from UPS called UPS My Choice. Back then I signed up because they had a sweepstakes at the time, but I’ve really come to like their service. I had completely forgotten about signing up until I placed my Vitacost order a few weeks back. Then, out of nowhere, I got a couple of alerts about my package, including the expected delivery time.

Although I didn’t need to do so, I had the option of using the UPS My Choice free service to reroute, reschedule or authorize the release of the shipment. If I had to go out of town unexpectedly or if I needed to reschedule the delivery time I could have easily done it online with my UPS My Choice account.

Since we do a lot of online deals that involve shipping, I highly recommend that you sign up for UPS My Choice too. It won’t cost you anything and the notifications and account functions are very useful. Sign up for UPS My Choice here.

FYI – UPS My Choice is sponsoring this post, but I wouldn’t have written about it if I wasn’t impressed (and pleasantly surprised) by their service.
