cvs-090516I had a great trip to CVS early on Monday morning. I managed to get everything on my list, although there was a big curveball. I attempted to use my 20% off regular price items coupon I received in my email last Thursday, but the register seemed to think it didn’t match my card (which was incorrect.) Luckily, I had bought the Dove Hair Care in a separate transaction first and I received a $10 off $60 coupon on my receipt. Because my second order was over $60 before coupons, I had the cashier just take that coupon instead. Those extra $10 of savings are reflected in the statistics at the bottom of this trip.

Because I walked into the store with a bunch of Extra Bucks, my out-of-pocket cost was…you’re not going to believe this…$0.01 (plus $3.29 of sales tax.) However, the actual cost is a bit more complicated to calculate because I walked in with a lot of Extra Bucks and walked out with a bunch too.

  1. Way to go

  2. You are lucky, I always like to see your shopping trips, but for me it usually never works, it used to be easier, but since the time that they update the registers, it is very difficult. I did a similar transaction and the register did not want to take the Crts from the red machine ( $2/2 mouthwash, $2/2 Boost, $3/15 cosmetics, $2/1 fabric softener ). It only took the $10 of $60, the cashier scanned every coupon but the register crashed. The manager was trying to tell me that you can not/ should not be able to do money makers. I knew that he was not right but I just let it go since I have a good relationship with the store and do not want to have any trouble in the future.
Next time I will not use those $10 of $60, I will prefer to use the coupons from the red machine.

    • Steve Pinski says:

I was pretty lucky, especially because I shopped when there was nobody else shopping during the wee hours. Lately a few coupons have been kicked out and needed overrides, but I am fortunate to have a good, coupon-friendly store as long as I hit them up when they’re not busy.

  3. Crest did not produce the ecb for me. But the clerk ran it through.

  4. I had the same problem with the machine not taking off the CVS coupons. Register crashed, rerang and crashed again. Total nightmare and when I spend my $30 in Extrabucks I’m done with CVS. It was much easier before they updated the registers.

  5. Summer Walker says:

I like to see your shopping trips too, Steve! So inspiring. Just wish I could get my husband more interested in couponing. So far he only uses them for things such as coffee and Breath rite strips, but I’m working on him!

  6. Love your scenarios and thank you and wish I could do them all. I do not get all of the E cash back offers you do, however. Also, I am finding I need to check over my CVS receipts later since when there is a line of customers at cashiers, I don’t feel comfortable doing so, and so I end up going back to get it straightened out. I hate that. On the other hand, CVS still is the easiest to use of pharmacy cash backs

    • Steve Pinski says:

I wish I could do all the deals I write up too. I wrote up an awesome Target scenario on Sunday night, but it was only good through Monday and I didn’t get over to the store to do it for myself!

  7. I was very lucky, I received a coupon in the mail for a FREE Venus razor. I purchased (2) Venus razors $8.99 each, used the CVS APP $3 off $15 Venus razors, used $3 off $15 Venus razors CVS Red coupon machine, CheckOut51 $1.00 rebate, used a 25% off email coupon, and received $6.00 ExtraBucks. Moneymaker!

  8. I’m surprised they let you use the $3/$15 makeup AND the $5/$15 Physicians Formula on a $20 purchase. I thought they would require a $30 purchase to use both coupons.

    • Steve Pinski says:

They $5/$15 Physicians Formula said MFR on it, so I was ready to stand up for myself if necessary. However, the cashier never even questioned it. I’m blessed to have a really coupon friendly CVS store. Also, the cashier was willing to manually the calculate the 20% off coupon on the transaction, but I decided to bank a little bit of goodwill and just use the $10 off coupon.

  9. hi, Steve, did u have problem when trying to use the 3 dollars off 2 dove coupon??? I was trying to buy the exact same shampoo and the coupon didn’t scan, I told her try to
manually type in the coupon code and she rejected to do it, I never had a probelm with cvs before, but since the update it’s causing me problem every time I shop.

    • Steve Pinski says:

I think my only problems were with the gum CVS store coupon and one Extra Buck the cashier forgot to scan (but we caught it.)

  10. question can you use both the 20% coupon and the $10 off $60 or is it either or? I have both so I want to do my math before going to the store thank you 🙂

    • Steve Pinski says:

Some stores will allow both, but the register will calculate the 20% after the $10 has been deducted, even if you have them scan the $10 coupon after the 20%.
