Well, it’s not the greatest savings rate in the world, but it was still a passable trip to Walgreens. ;) The Almay cost a little more than I was initially anticipating, and my choice of filler could have been something a bit more economical, but I have no regrets.

And just for giggles, I found this by the cosmetics counter:

pfftreally

Yeah, it’s a single bar of Neutrogena soap with a peelie coupon on it… a peelie which specifically excludes the bar soap. I think there were four or five bars of soap like that on the shelf. It’s pretty much an art installation that reflects my feelings about couponing at Wags as of late.

The shopping itself went fine but my favorite cashier wasn’t manning the cosmetics counter yet, so through the standard ol’ checkout I went. While I unloaded my basket onto the counter, the elderly gentleman with the morning paper waiting behind me was whistling Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” since it was playing over the store PA system. I tried to make small talk, saying something like, “They’re playing the good music this morning” but he either didn’t hear me or decided not to acknowledge it.

The first transaction was pretty straightforward just to roll one of last week’s $1.50 RR’s. Transaction 2 hit a snag when the cashier said I couldn’t use the Almay manufacturer coupon and the Almay Walgreens coupon at the same time. I told her that I only had one manufacturer coupon, so surely the Wags book coupon could be used on the second item? She decided to page a manager, and Piano Man behind me suddenly changed his tune from laid back whistling to irate hmph-ing and annoyed sighing.

My passive side who detests being an inconvenience to anybody was yelling to just pay the extra money and stop causing trouble, while the part of me with an actual backbone was shouting, “You KNOW you’re in the right! Let the manager come, and in the meantime you can sing a few bars of that snappy hit single by Cee Lo Green to pass the time for Mr. Impatient behind you.” I split the difference and waited for the manager… quietly.

After clarifying with the manager, I was able to use both Almay coupons (one for each Almay item.) The notebook was a filler item so I could use all of my RR’s on Transaction 2. When I found it, I may have audibly squealed. Britto is one of my absolute favorite artists. After floundering back and forth on the $2.99 price tag, I knew I’d regret leaving the store without it. Then it’d haunt me for years.

Reminds me of a tablecloth I walked away from at a tag sale almost 4-5 years ago. The boyfriend is pretty tired of hearing about that one…

  1. Even though some of Groovy’s posts don’t even apply to me, I usually read them anyway. I always get a good chuckle out of them! :)

  2. I’m curious – is it walgreens policy to not allow a store and manufacturer coupon on the same item? I know most walgreens stores don’t allow overage, but I’ve never heard of that one before. Couponing over there is so confusing!

    • Monica Bragg says:

The new policy will not allow them to accept coupons for more than the price of the item. They do accept a store and manufacturer as long as the combined coupons are less than the price of the item.

    • My local Wags in particular is a bit weird when it comes to using store and manufacturer coupons on the same item, and ESPECIALLY when it comes to the Almay coupons. I guess they were losing too much money to us darn pesky couponers.

      • I had the same fight a few weeks ago with the $3 Revlon nail polish coupons! Two stores refused to make the transaction; the 3rd did it with no problems at all! Ain’t Walgreens wonderful to couponers – NOT!!!!!

  3. Kudos on a good shopping trip. But seriously this post made me LOL! “That snappy hit single by cee lo green…..”. Hahaha!
